Painted Turtles can be found in many Nova Scotia ponds. These turtles feed on small fish, insects and leeches when they are young and then eat more plants, insects, tadpoles, leeches, and small animals found in the shallow waters when they are adults. Turtle eggs and young are eaten by Raccoons, snakes, Blue Herons, and Snapping Turtles; however, an adult's hard shell protects the adult from most predators.
Snapping Turtle
Snapping Turtles are voracious carnivores, which grow to very large sizes and will eat fish, small birds such as baby ducks, and any small animals they can find on the bottom or along the edge of the water. As with the Painted Turtle, the eggs and babies are food for predators like Raccoons, Blue Herons, and Red Foxes, but not many organisms will hurt an adult.
