Consumers
Green Algae
Were you successful in finding information to help answer the last question? I discovered that there are other producers besides plants. The video showed that green algae are plantlike protists and that there are different kinds. They play an important role in the pond ecosystem. Plants might be the producers we see all the time, but there are other, much smaller producers living in ponds.
Besides the plants and protists, there are plenty of animals in the pond ecosystem. The dragonfly started us on this quest, and there are frogs, toads, and turtles just waiting to make a tasty meal of the dragonfly if they get a chance. We call organisms that eat other organisms consumers, and there are lots of them. What would you and I be, consumers or producers? That is what we have to think about as we piece the Pond Food Web together; which organisms make food and which ones have to eat other organisms. So, what group is at the beginning of all food chains and food webs? Make your choice by clicking on one of the links below.
